Touramaline is one of the most significant mineral groups for metaphysical use and it comes in a wide variety of different forms, colours and energy spectrums. According to an old Egyptian legend, the reason for its wide variety of colours is that on its long journey up from the centre of the Earth, it passed through a rainbow. In doing so, it assumed all the colours of the rainbow. And that is why it is still referred to as the ‘gemstone of the rainbow’ today.

Another peculiarity of Tourmaline, in addition to its wide variety of colours, is that when heated or rubbed, it acquires an electric charge and attracts small objects such as hair or small pieces of paper.

Tourmaline has a number of factors which affect its value in the market today. Due to the low dispersion that it has, the color is extremely important for gem material to be used in jewellery . The more intense the color of the gem, the more valuable it is. Clarity and rarity are also determining factors in worth. If the stone has a clear appearance and the specimen in rare the stone is obviously more valuable.

Black Tourmaline (also known as Schorl) is one of the most popular stones for spiritual purposes. Some of the best specimens come from Brazil, Africa, Pakistan and Maine in the US. Many fine Pink Tourmaline crystals come from California although good quality specimens are also found in Brazil, Africa and Afghanistan. Red Tourmaline (also known as Rubellite) is found primarily in Brazil and also in Africa, California and Maine.

Green Tourmaline is found in Brazil, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the US. The best Watermelon Tourmaline specimens are found in Brazil and Africa and are the most sought after crystals for working with energies of the heart. Blue Tourmaline is found in Brazil, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Africa. Brown Tourmaline (also known as Dravite) is primarily found in Brazil.

Tourmaline’s healing properties are slightly different depending on the colour but generally, it is prized for calming nerves, regulating hormones, fighting against genetic disorders, inducing a tranquil sleep, relieving arthritis pain and fighting heart diseases.

In terms of mystical properties, Tourmaline is said to dispel fear, negativity and grief. According to legend, Tourmaline of all colours protects the wearer against dangers and misfortune.
